Just heard back from Ken Roberts, the chief librarian at the Hamilton Public Library. Ken argues that librarians have the unilateral ability to apply the intent of the photo policy on a case-by-case basis. The intent of the policy is to protect what Ken calls a "small but important" subset of the library's customers who do not wish to be photographed or may feel obligated to be photographed if asked by an authority figure. In response, I have suggested that it then makes sense that photographers wishing to photograph...
During my presentation to the Hamilton Public Library Board Chief Librarian Ken Roberts and Robert Plant the library's manager of communications and community development made an interesting comment. They concurred that parents taking pictures of their children need not fill out the library's permission form. So, I'm asking them, "Why not?" Will let you know what comes of this. Dear Ken and Rob: I appreciate the opportunity I had to present to the Board last night. Thank you. I think that having the photography...
On January 19, I had five minutes to present to the Hamilton Public Library Board my view that their existing photo policy was overly draconian, especially since I considered the library a public space. Below is my presentation. Afterwards the Board decided not to change its policy but to make its forms more available to the public. Public Photography in the LibraryLadies and Gentlemen. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak to you this evening. I am presenting as a photographer, as a citizen journalist...
Ladies and Gentlemen. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak to you this evening. I am presenting as a photographer, as a citizen journalist and as a citizen. As I outlined in my letter, I recently had the experience of being prevented from taking pictures in the Hamilton Public Library by a librarian and a security guard. This is, unfortunately, becoming a more frequent occurrence in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and worldwide. Photographers are being harassed, prevented and questioned by security guards...
I'm writing again about the Terms of Service for the Spec's Eye on the Area. In the past couple of years, lots of companies have reconsidered their Terms of Service to address exactly the issue I've raised about the extreme and onerous nature. Yes, your lawyers may have suggested the wording, but they work for you, not the other way around. Right now this is a lose/lose situation - You lose by missing out on getting some great local photos, photographers miss out by having unnecessary permissions assigned to a...
December 19, 2010 Santina Moccio Chair, Hamilton Public Library Board Dear Ms. Moccio: I am writing to you to request the opportunity to address the Library Board, at your January meeting about the issue of public photography in the Hamilton Public Library. I was recently in the newly re-opened HPL and was taking some photos of the new design to share online. I was informed by a librarian and security guard that I was not allowed to take photographs on the premises. I politely complied, but I was not aware...
A lab in National Committee for Cultural Heritage, in Italy. Art historian, Silvano Vincenti addresses a small gathering of professionals. He brings up a slide of the Mona Lisa VINCENTI: I have called you here to announce a remarkable discovery about the Mona Lisa. ART HISTORIAN: Oh, oh, let me guess, her eyes follow you around the room! General laughter. Vincenti waits politely. ANOTHER ONE: It’s DaVinci in drag, I knew it! More laughter, Vincenti getting restless. THIRD ART HISTORIAN: Oh, oh, I know! I know...
We open on a simple kitchen in the prairies, lit by the honey glow of a setting sun. TOM: Gosh, Willie, I wish I was going off to fight the Hun like you and all your underaged but keen school chums. WILLIE (chucking): Don’t fret, Tommy Boy, you’ll get your chance to give the Krauts a lickin’. Just give it a couple of years. TOM: A couple of years! Ma says this war will be over this time next Christmas, sure as shootin’! WILLIE: Ah, don’t you listen to Ma about no war. Sure, she’s good at cannin’ and cookin’ and...
